Big Beach Makena
| Just a few steps away, well actually a short 5 minute drive south of Wailea and a bit past the resorts and condo's of Makena is the infamous "Big" Beach. If you have ever wondered where that long stretch of sand is when you are landing at the Kahalui (OGG) airport off in the distance it is Big Beach.
Big Beach is probably the last remaining unspoiled beach left on Maui. All of the rest, from Kapalua in the north to Kihei and sadly Wailea in the south have had, over the years condo's or resorts build along their shores...but not Big Beach. Looking for that secluded sunset walk, this is your beach! |
| I have been going to Big Beach since the mid to late 70's and it has really not changed, except for perhaps the paving of the parking lot. You can still find the shave ice vans parked along the road and locals mingling with the few tourists that venture away from the hotels and resorts of the island.
If you are looking at visiting Big Beach there are a couple of this you should remember when planning your trip. 1. There are no lifeguards, so refrain from any foolishness in and around the ocean, it can be unforgiving. 2. Pack a good lunch and plenty of sunscreen, you'll need it along with plenty of water as this is a remote beach. 3. Film/memory cards. This is a beautiful beach so take lots of photo's. Please note: the adjacent "Little" Beach, on the other side of the lava outcropping at the south side of the beach is clothing optional! If you are bringing the little ones or are a bit reserved you should stay to the north of the lava outcropping. If you're not Little Beach is very small and crowded, most of the time, so arriving early is a must.
